News | Sony unveils PlayStation VR2 design

Sony has revealed the design of the PlayStation VR2 and the 'latest version' of accompanying controllers in several photos.

In line with the PlayStation 5 and the PlayStation VR2 Sense controller, the VR glasses themselves are designed with white and black colors. Sony emphasizes the ‘round’ appearance of the glasses, which should match the controllers well.

The most notable new feature of the goggles is a ventilation system that keeps players’ heads cool. Thanks to an ‘airflow’, which Sony compares to that in the PlayStation 5, lenses of the glasses could not fog up during gameplay.

The glasses are also generally lighter, they should be suitable for different head sizes thanks to an adjustable headband and players can adjust the lenses themselves. This makes it possible to adjust the glasses to the exact distance between the pupils of the user, which improves the experience. The PS VR2 also includes a 3.5mm jack for headphones and vibration motors.

Sony previously revealed the specifications of the PS VR2. For example, the OLED screen of the glasses is 4000 by 2040 pixels (2000 by 2040 per eye) and the field of view is 110 degrees.

Furthermore, PlayStation VR2 has inside-out tracking, so that a separate camera is not necessary. Thanks to four cameras in the device itself, there is no need for colored LEDs on the device so that you can keep track of where the player is. These cameras also track the controllers. Finally, the helmet with cameras tracks players’ eyes, allowing players to use their eyes to control the camera.

A price and release date for the PlayStation VR 2 have not yet been announced.

News | Sony plants a tree for unlocked Trophy in Horizon Forbidden West

Sony will plant a tree for each specific Trophy unlocked in Horizon Forbidden West.

For the so-called ‘Play and Plant program’, the company works together with the Arbor Day Foundation. It’s about the ‘Reached and Daunt’ Trophy, which players can unlock after about an hour and a half into the game by following the main story. For every player who achieves this Trophy, a tree is planted in deforested areas in the United States.

Specifically, this concerns a number of natural parks, namely Douglas Country Forest in Wisconsin, Sheep Fire Private Lands in California and Torreya State Park in Florida. It is estimated that about 288,000 trees are needed to revive these parks. The promotion is valid until March 25.

Horizon Forbidden West will be available this Friday on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

News | Sony aquires Bungie for $3.6 billion

Sony has announced that it' s buying Bungie for $3.6 billion.

The Destiny franchise continues to be multiplatform. Bungie will also continue to have the option to independently choose what their games appear on. They may also continue to publish their own games on platforms of their choice.

“We’ve had a great partnership with Bungie since the inception of the Destiny franchise and couldn’t be happier to welcome them to the PlayStation family,” PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan told Games Industry. “This is an important step in our strategy to bring PlayStation to an even wider audience.”

“With Sony Interactive Entertainment, we’ve found a partner who will unconditionally support us in all that we are and support our vision to spread entertainment across generations, while ensuring the creative independence that is at Bungie’s heart,” reads an article on the Bungie website. “Sony just believes us that game worlds are just the beginning of what our IPs can become. Together we share the dream of nurturing iconic franchises that unite friends across the world, families spanning generations and fans spanning multiple platforms and entertainment forms.”

Bungie was bought by Microsoft in 2000 and developed the first Halo games for the company. In 2007, Bungie announced it was once again an independent studio, after which it made Destiny and Destiny 2. The company struck a deal with Activision Blizzard to release those games, but dropped that deal in 2019. Bungie continues to release updates and expansions for Destiny 2 and is also working on a completely new IP, which is not yet known. Furthermore, it previously announced that it wants to open a new studio in Amsterdam in 2022.

Earlier in January, two other major acquisitions within the gaming industry were announced. Microsoft plans to acquire Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion and Take-Two to acquire Zynga for $12.7 billion.
