News | First The Witcher game gets a remake

CD Projekt Red has announced that a remake of the first The Witcher is in the works.

The company announced this in a blog post. The remake will be completely rebuilt on Unreal Engine 5 by the Polish studio Fool’s Theory. CD Projekt Red oversees development. Production of the game is still at an early stage.

The codename of the remake, Canis Majoris, has already been revealed. With that announcement, CD Projekt Red talked about a story-driven, single-player, open-world RPG being developed by a third-party studio made up of people who have worked on The Witcher games before.

“The Witcher is where it all started for us,” studio head Adam Badowski said in a statement. “It was the first game we ever made and that was a big moment for us. Going back to this world and remaking the game for a new generation of gamers feels just as big, maybe even bigger than that.”

The Witcher originally came out on PC in 2007. The game is based on the Saga o wiedźminie book series by fantasy writer Andrzej Sapkowski. The game first introduced main character Geralt of Rivia. It is not yet clear when the remake will be released. “While it will be some time before we are ready to share more about the game, I know it will be worth the wait,” Badowski concluded.

News | Pre-production of new The Witcher game has started

CD Projekt Red has officially started pre-production on the new The Witcher game.

Chief financial officer Piotr Nielubowicz announced this. “We recently completed the research phase, which means the project is now in pre-production, so we’ve started allocating development costs to the new game.”

Nielubowicz did not provide more details. CD Projekt Red announced earlier this year that it is working on an all-new game in the The Witcher franchise. It is only known that the game does not run on the usual RedEngine, but on Unreal Engine 5.

The setting and main character of the new The Witcher game are unknown. CD Projekt Red has always said that the Geralt of Rivia story is over, leading many to assume that players in the new The Witcher game control a different character. The developer also said that the new game is a “new saga”.

News | CD Projekt Red Announces New The Witcher Game

CD Projekt Red is working on a new game in the The Witcher franchise. The game will run on Unreal Engine 5.

The company has disclosed this on its official website. The Polish studio already has three The Witcher games to its name – including the successful The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. It also has a spin-off around Gwent, the card game from The Witcher 3, made.

“We’re pleased to announce that the next installment in The Witcher game series is currently in development and is a new saga for the franchise.” What is meant by the latter is unknown, but previously CD Projekt explicitly stated that it only had plans for a trilogy around Geralt of Rivia. The new game may therefore revolve around a different main character, although this has not yet been confirmed. The artwork below that shows a new medallion also seems to hint at that.

Furthermore, CD Projekt Red says it is working closely with Epic Games , even a multi-year strategic partnership has been signed. The new The Witcher game will therefore not run on the usual REDengine, but on Unreal Engine 5. This does not mean that the game will be released exclusively on PC on Epic Games Store: the developer has announced via social media that the game is not exclusive. will appear on one digital store.

There are no further details yet. The company also couldn’t say how far the game is in development or when the game should be released. CD Projekt Red did report that the REDengine is still being used for the development of an upcoming expansion to Cyberpunk 2077. In 2020, the company already announced that it would start on a new The Witcher game shortly after the release of Cyberpunk 2077.

News | Player numbers The Witcher 3 rise after the launch of the Netflix series

The number of players for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on Steam have risen after the launch of the Netflix series last Friday.

This is according to figures from Steam Charts. Although there are normally around 15,000 people playing The Witcher 3 at the same time on Steam, this increased further during the weekend and last Monday the counter stood at more than 49,000 simultaneous players.

This is undoubtedly related to the launch of The Witcher on Netflix, a series based on the books of the same name. The games take place after these books.
